HUMIDOR

 Cuban Cigar House

Setting up your new humidor

Setting up your humidor properly in the beginning is essential to proper humidity control in the future.  There in more too it than just opening the box and throwing your cigars inside.  It does not take long to setup, but instructions should be followed.

Step 1:
Calibrate your hygrometer
Need Salt Plastic Ziplock bag or Tupperware container Small container (one that fits inside the bag) Couple drops of water
Directions Take a teaspoon of salt put it in an open container.
(I use the top to a Gatorade bottle) Put a couple drops of water on the salt, enough to make it damp don't make seawater, make it so its like wet sand.  Place your hygrometer in the bag along with the small container. (Don't spill it) Seal the bag with some air in there.  Check it in about 6-8 hours see if it has stabilized.  Once it has stabilized take your hygrometer out of the bag.  It should read somewhere around 75%.  If it does not, get a small screwdriver and on the back of the hygrometer you will see a small screw.  Turn the screw until the meter reads 75%.
Alternate Method Wrap meter in a moist towel.  Leave in towel for about 5-10 minutes.  Unwrap meter and it should read 98%,
if not adjust by turning screw on back of meter.
(This method is not suggested since you are calibrating your meter at 98%.  This is not near the optimal 65-75% range you are trying to achieve, and could be inaccurate when those levels are attained.
Step 2:
Wet down the humidor
Directions With a soft cloth, wet it with distilled water or solution, and completely wipe down the inside of the humidor.  This will allow the inside wood to achive a higher humidity.  If you do not do this the wood will keep pulling the humidity from the air, and the humidity inside the humidor will keep going down.  This may need to be done a couple of times.
NOTE:  This may cause some discoloration in the wood!
Step 3:
Charge the humidifier
Directions Put distilled water in a dish.  Put enough to cover the humidifier about 1/2 way up. If you use a humidification solution, fill dish up with solution. Soak for about a minute, then remove from water and shake off excess water and dry casing so it doesn't' drip on the cigars. Now your ready to install it in the humidor.  Recharge every 2-6 months depending on your use.
Step 4:
Mount the humidifier and hygrometer
Directions If they do not come preinstalled, use the Velcro, double stick tape, or magnet and mount the hygrometer or humidifier where desired.

Relative Humidity is the amount of moisture air can hold at different temperatures.
These guidelines may be able to help you calibrate your hygrometer correctly.

NOTES

1.) Read the temperature in humidor.
2.) Find temperature in left column.
3.) Read RH next to this temperature.
4.) This is the RH at this temp that
is equivalent to 70 % RH @ 70.
5.) Adjust the hygrometer correction

FOR EXAMPLE:

1.) You read a humidor temp of 66.
2.) Find 66 in the left column.
3.) Read 80 % in the right column.
4.) This is the RH your hygrometer
should read to give you the same
humidification as 70 % RH @ 70.

You know your hygrometer reads 2 % low
so subtract 2 % from 80 %.
Your hygrometer should
read 78 % (at 66 ),when the true RH is 80 %.
